Step 1: Turn off the water

The main stopcock shuts off the water for the whole house. Turn its lever a quarter turn, until it stands across the pipe.

  • Switch off the power

    Water near sockets, lights or the fuse box? Switch off the fuse for that room. Do not touch wet switches.

  • Catch the water

    Buckets under the drip, towels on the floor. Open a cold tap downstairs to empty the pipes.

  • Move what can soak

    Rugs, boxes, cables and devices: up and away from the water.

  • Take photos

    Of the leak and the damage, before you clean up. Your insurance will ask for them.
